Break out your horns- your party horns that is- and make some noise for the rhinos today. Today, September 22, is World Rhino Day which celebrates all five species of rhino: Black, White, Greater One-Horned, Sumatran and Javan. First announced by the World Wildlife Fund in South Africa in 2010, World Rhino Day has since grown to become a global phenomenon, uniting zoos, cause-related organizations, businesses, and concerned individuals from nearly every corner of the world. Up to 1,000 rhino are expected to be poached this year for their valuable horn, now worth more than gold. Take a look at this link for ideas on how to celebrate World Rhino Day along with other friends of the rhino and find information on organizations that are committed to saving these magnificent animals.
EXPLORE is very involved in rhino conservation and anti-poaching initiatives specifically working with exclusive safari operators andBeyond and Great Plains Conservation in supporting their program Rhinos Without Borders. Their mission is to move rhinos to safe havens in Botswana in order to save them from the poaching crisis. Cherri Briggs, founder of EXPLORE, was invited to a relocation event last year where six white rhino were released into Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Take a look here for more information on that along with links to several ‘Rhinos Without Borders’ videos that are worth a view.
After the party’s over, the rhinos need your help. Here are only a couple of the many organizations that with your contributions can help these animals keep their horns where they belong. Rhino you want to.
