Cherri and the EXPLORE team spend a lot of time in the air, waiting for connecting flights in airports, and navigating through the remote parts of Africa. We have discovered some apps through our personal experience and experts like Wendy Perrin which help us navigate, negotiate and get there on time, without losing our sanity. We share some of our personal navigational aids with you here:
What’s App?!: This gem of an App allows us to communicate with anyone, across any platform, whenever we have 3G or WiFi. So when on safari if you happen upon a croc being strangled by a python, a mama leopard playing with her cubs or a great sunset, snap it with your smart phone and send it home via What’s App without paying a cent, shilling, kwacha, or rand.
Free Wi-Fi Finder
On safari you will wind up in many places where Wi-Fi is not readily available. This can be a respite from what can start to feel like ‘In Your Face Book’… and getting messages from everyone you have met since junior high school, or it can be maddening when you have to find a Wi-Fi link to communicate with loved ones or co-workers back home. If you need to stay connected and are within range of a Wi-Fi connection use the Wi-Fi Finder App to help you locate the nearest connection between adventures.
Gate Guru
If you find yourself stuck in an airport with several hours to pass the time, this brilliant App will tell you which gate to go to for sushi, camera gear, a facial, or pedicure. Praises to the Gate Guru for helping us find what we’re looking for without wandering the concourses.
Hotel Tonite
Didn’t expect that overnight layover? At 9AM every day you can get onto Hotel Tonite and find the best deals at nearby hotels for that night only. A little shut eye and cushy white robes here we come.
XE Currency App
Otherwise known as the life saver app: the XE Currency App allows us to convert any currency in a flash and it saves our most recent currency exchange questions so we don’t have to rely on internet connection, or our own jet lagged brains to calculate the dollar cost. When bouncing between countries and your mind is swarming with various currencies, this app comes in handy and can save you big bucks when haggling for bargains (by forgetting a zero).
